The Japanese connection

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Here’s a non-Carnatic song from me after a while!

Ajay Chandran
passed on this absolutely beautiful Japanese song from Final Fantasy to me quite a while back, and told me he was writing alternate lyrics for it which he wanted me to sing. The idea really excited me- for one, the song was so beautiful and two, by past experience, working on Ajay’s lyrics was always a pleasure… Like with many other projects in the past this too got stalled and stalled… but finally here it is!

Many many thanks to Meera who mixed this for us in no time and making me sound better than I actually do perhaps :P

Here’s the original song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlwSPMwAqbM

It might be interesting for you to note that Ajay has tried to make many of the Hindi words rhyme or sound similar in some way, to the original Japanese lyrics! Great job Ajay, to come up with something completely on your own and make it fit in so beautifully with an existing tune, that too with some resemblance to the original words which were in a totally unrelated language! Enjoyed doing this :)

Here are Ajay’s lyrics:

udti pirun main to aasmaan mein yoon
main chanchal, hawaa ki tarah
gum hai kahaan
teri aashiqui mein
kaash ye dil ko..hosh aaye

sajna main yoon
teri raah khadi
dekh zara..
kabhi to yahaan
hosh nahin.. mujhe.. tu jo mila..
tuu hi magar ye jaane naa..

dil kii aahen….kahe maahi thaamo baahen
aaa yoon, jiya na jalaaa
yahaan jaltii hoon
kahaan jaane aankhen teri
aise to.. naa jaa…

so jaaoon mai
kho jaaoon aaj mein
aaun phir aankhon mein
banke aansoon

kahin se sada
teri dil ne suni
aankh khuli.. kuch bhi nahiin
haqeekat kya.. jaane kyaa sapnaa
kaun se sach ko maanu mai

kehna kabhi
hoon mai kaun teri
khel nahiin ..
pyaar mera
umeed to hai.. jaane.. kyon dil mein..
laut ke tum phir aaoge..

dil kii aahen….kahe maahi thaamo baahen
aaa yoon, jiya na jalaaa
yahaan jaltii hoon
kahaan jaane aankhen teri
aise to.. naa jaa…

so jaaoon main
kho jaaoon aaj main
aaun phir aankhon mein
banke aansoo

Don’t Say Alvida (Main Aur Mrs.Khanna)

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Have been pretty busy for a while now with a variety of things on my plate. Was not planning on recording anything but heard this one on MTV and couldnt resist myself ! Beautiful song, beautiful lyrics, beautiful tune, beautiful voices – what more do you need ! Melody still rules !! The song is from the movie ‘Main Aur Mrs.Khanna’. Sajid-Wajid has composed this chartbuster which has already topped the Bollywood top 10 list in most websites. Sonu Niigam and Shreya Ghoshal have rendered this in their own sweet way. Must say they are the Kishore-Lata of this age. What amazes me with these two singers is how easy it sounds when you hear the song and yet when you try to sing it you understand how difficult it is to get the small things right. Amazing duo ! I hope they live a 100 years to give us more of such music pleasure.

Vidyu has been kind enough to lend me her vocals to complete this one. She sounds absolutely amazing. I bet Shreya would be very happy to hear her version :-) I am a little bit rusty but i hope you will still lend your ear to listen to our humble attempt.

The movie just released on the occassion of Diwali. Here’s wishing you all a very happy and prosperous Diwali. Khub mithai khao aur khilao :-) God Bless and thanx for listening :-)

Kishore Kumar songs

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

There are a slew of KishoreDa’s bengali numbers that I absolutely love…”Amaar Dip Nebhano Raat” (my all time favorite), “Aaj Milantithir”, “Amaar Moner Ei”, and many many others. This particular one, from the movie Prarthona, is no exception. Full of murkhis, harkatein, in almost every other word so to speak. And every time I listen to it, I discover a new nuance that I missed previously. I have no classical training, but somehow my ears tell me this one is based on some popular raaga. Anyone knows? Tried this song with a couple of my own variations, let me know how you like it.
To start, here’s a Rabindra Sangeet, from Tagore’s famous dance-drama Shyama:

Anil Kapoor did a nice job portraying the title character in ‘Saheb’. His bengali counterpart Tapas Pal, in contrary, didn’t do as well in the bengali version (same title), well to me at least. OK plot (pretty sad though!), but excellent acting by Utpal Dutt, and Rakhee. As usual, KishoreDa brings out the pensive mood perfectly. Thanks to my friend Azam for the track.

I had always been a Big-B fan, since his debut role in Saat Hindusthani. But Mahaan was definitely not one of those to write home about. Soggy story, dime-a-dozen type storyline. Big-B himself sang the slower version of this number. But I like KishoreDa’s version better (faster, more melodious). You might wonder why on earth did I select Jidhar Dekhoon amongst many other much better KishoreDa songs. Blame Dish Network!
BTW, I AM trying to improve my pronunciations on certain hindi words (like Gham, Khabar, Nazar, etc.).

Gudgudee from Just Married

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I am uploading a song of my daughter Priyanka after a long time. As you can see she has very good potential as a singer if she gives more attention to music and singing which she is not able to do at present due to the priorities attached to academics .

Here she has covered a song from the movie ‘Just Married’ sung originally by Sunidhi Chauhan..Though this song somehow did not get too popular, this is one of my favourite songs of Sunidhi.

Priyanka has dedicated this song to her best friend Deepika who had requested her to sing this quite sometime back……

A special thanks to Azam bhai who promptly arranged the track ….

Friends please listen and let us know what you feel about it

Raag Miyan ki Todi

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Miyan Tansen (born Ramtanu Pandey 1506 – 1589) , one of the greatest vocalists and composers of Hindustani classical music was born in Behat, near Gwalior to Hindu Brahmin parents. He learnt music from Swami Haridas of Brindavan and later from Muhammad Ghaus (Sufi saint of Shattari order).

He was believed to be the contemporary of Baiju Bawra. He was in the court of King Ramchandra Baghela of Reva when Shehanshah Akbar called for him and kept him in his court as one of the Navratna (nine jewels). Tansen later converted to Islam. Akbar honored him with the title of “Miyan”.

Several of the Hindustani Raag are composed by him and often called…Miyan ki Todi, Miyan ki Malhar, Miyan ki Mand amd Miyan ka Sarang. He is also credited with creating major raag like Darbari Kanada, Darbari Todi, and Rageshwari.

Swami Haridas, Tansen and Baiju Bawra were “Dhrupad” style singers.

Tansen married Husseini. All his children, Tanras Khan, Bilas Khan, Hamirsen, Suratsen and Saraswati Devi were musicians.Almost all Gharanas of Hindustani music trace their lineage to Tansen. Tansen was buried in the mousoleum complex of his Guru, Muhammed Ghaus, in Gwalior.

“Khuda-e-Bartar” is based on Raag Miyan ki Todi, (similar raag..Bilaskhani Todi, Gurjari Todi).
Despite the obvious strain on my voice from not being well, I have selected this song because of Sahir’s lyrics.

I thank Rajesh for singing the Pakkad (quintessence) of Raag Todi.

Aate Jaate with Paras ji

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Movie : Maine Pyar Kiya (Hindi)
Song : Aate Jaate
Music : Ram Laxman
Originally Sung by : Lata Mangeshkar , S.P.Balasubrahmanyam
Performed By : Parasmani Acharya, Dhiraj Barla

This song is in the offing from at least 4 months now. First of all I would like to thank the veteran singer of Audio blog world Paras ji, for accepting my request to do this song. Paras ji is a versatile singer and I think everyone who is associated with Audio blog world would agree with me. She has this great tendency to create an aura around her song choices and writing interesting snippets about them. Sorry Paras ji, It took me a while to get this song done.

This song is from the movie Maine Pyar Kiya, it created a mass hysteria among movie goers during those days. There were so many movies that were made after this movie in this genre, but not even one single movie came close to this one, if we take the success factor into consideration.

I wanted to sing this song from a long time, this movie songs have a special place in my heart. I started to show interest in learning Hindi songs only because the songs were sung by Padma Sri. S.P.Balasubrahmanyam garu. I owe him a lot.

Hope you guys like it.

Please pardon the quality of Karaoke track, I did lot of fixing, but still the quality is not up to the mark.
