MJ, this one’s for you – Team Sonu Niigaam

Monday, August 31st, 2009

About 2 months back, Smitha Passanha informed me about a tribute that Sonu Niigaam was organizing for Michael Jackson and that he was looking for singers to participate in this effort. I sent in one of my MJ covers (Beat It) and ended up being one among the intial 6 chosen singers. I was thrilled to say the least and at the same time extremely humbled.

This project is a true testimonial to the fact that the world is shrinking thanks to the Internet. The vocalists were spread all over the world (Canada/US/UK/India) and each of us recorded our vocals remotely and sent it in. The song and the video was then compiled and mixed by the team.

The whole experience was just mind blowing and definitely the biggest project I have been part of thus far! The whole team did such a great job in every respect!!! Special thanks to Sonu for envisioning this project and more importantly following through on it and coming up with a truly fitting tribute to MJ!!

Official release story was done by Kavita Chhibber and can be found here

Audio will be available on iTunes shortly.

George and Sudeip’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Sudeip and I go back a long way. We met back in college where he was my super senior. It is thanks to him that I started singing in college, it is thanks to him that I joined Muziboo and most importantly it is thanks to him that my wife heard me sing for the first time.

We covered this song a while back. I thought its only fitting to post it here today as a tribute to Michael Jackson. He has influenced both me and Sudeip tremendously. He’s an artist whose music transcends time. He defined a generation!

I Won’t Forget You – Jim Reeves cover

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

jimreevesI do not need a particular day for music, because I breathe and live with music everyday. Everyday is a music day for me. Music is my best stress-buster, music is my first love, music is my best friend and music is the way I connect to God. The world music day reminds me that music has no barrier of language or region or religion. Music is universal. And I think music lovers should open themselves to listen to all kinds of music to broaden their experience of music. Because there is no such thing called bad music. It is all related to how much a person can appreciate a certain form of music and it is some artists or bands who make the music sound bad.

Fellow music blogger and a good singer himself Mr. N V Krishnan suggested that I should sing some songs by Jim Reeves. He thought that it would suit me well, after he listened to my song Let Them Sleep. He suggested a few songs and I listened to one of the songs yesterday. I loved it, particularly the lyrics, and recorded it straight away. So here is my song for the world music day, dedicated to N V K.

Lambada (originally by Kaoma)

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

I wanted to do something totally different and hence picked this song. This is a song by the French group Kaoma. Lambada is actually a form of dance for couples that is very popular in Brazil. There are a number of songs based around this dance form and this one is probably the most recognized world wide.

The song was originally sung by a woman. I did not want to change the scale as I felt it would ruin the beauty of the song. This definitely ranks as one of the toughest songs I’ve covered coz of the style, all the subtle expressions and nuances and ofcourse the language.

Hope this takes you down memory lane :)
